Itziar Familiar-Lopez, PhD

Assistant Professor

Itziar is a medical doctor from Mexico City working as a research associate in the MSU Department of Psychiatry, College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She received an MPH at the National School of Hygiene in Spain and a PhD in mental health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Prior to her PhD, she worked at the Mexican Health Foundation as a Public Health Prevention Specialist, where she conducted independent research to inform public policy.

Her primary research interests are in assessing psychological distress among adults in conflict-affected settings, monitoring and evaluation of mental health interventions for women in low- and middle-income countries, and mental health issues of people living with HIV.  Her recent projects include the assessment of child development and maternal mental health in Uganda and Malawi.
