Psychotherapy Emphasis
Psychotherapy is a strongly integrated component of resident education and patient care. We believe psychotherapy is a skill that takes time to learn. Beginning in the PGY-2 year, residents begin to learn psychotherapy techniques as they see patients in the outpatient continuity clinic. Seeing outpatients in the PGY-2 year allows residents to treat patients over a three-year period. Residents are encouraged to provide various types of psychotherapy to all patients and are not restricted in the number of psychotherapy patients they can see. Residents have direct supervision and support from an experienced cohort of clinical and personal supervisors specializing in varied therapeutic philosophies.
Training in psychotherapy is taught using a graduated process. Resident seminars move from less complex, more manualized psychotherapy modalities, such as Solution-Focused Therapy, to more intricate modalities such as Insight-Oriented and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is taught in a group treatment setting. Psychotherapy seminars are taught during all years of the program. Additional seminars addressing psychotherapy are taught while residents are in the outpatient clinic. Listed below are the topic headings. Many of these topics are seminar series rather than individual seminars.
Graduates of the MSU Psychiatry Residency Program engage in a wide variety of practice styles. Our residents develop the skills to use psychotherapeutic techniques in psychotherapy sessions, and when needed to discuss and work on various problems that develop in other settings. These skills are important in working with patients around medication adherence issues, spousal disagreement with treatment options, family support issues, and many other problems psychiatrists must address.
